Week 8's Rocket Writing Stars were .......

Well done to Vinny and Charleigh who were the Star rocket Writers for Week 8. Vinny got the Star for making the most progress and Charleigh was awarded the Star for writing the most words. Way to go, you two - what a fabulous effort.

Our writing about Powelliphanta Snails

Haki brought along a Powelliphanta snail shell. We all thought it looked very neat but none of us really knew anything about the Powelliphanta snail. We did some research and found out that these snails are not snails that you will find in your garden but you will find them on the West Coast of New Zealand where we live. For writing we wrote about something we learnt about the Powelliphanta snail and we would like to share our writing with you. I'm sure you will all learn something too. Thanks for bringing the shell along Haki.

We made bird feeders

Last Friday Room 5 made bird feeders to feed all those hungry birds around our school. We used a pine cone to make a bird feeder. We mixed some fat(dripping) and bird seed together and then we pushed it onto the pine cone.

We hung the bird feeders on the trees around our school. We put some wire on the top of the pine cone to hang them up.

On Friday we went to check out how much the birds had eaten. Some had fallen off the tree so we hung them back up. Ben found his pine cone and all the bird feed was gone. We hope some hungry birds have filled their tummies. Someone said it could be a hungry weka. We all enjoyed making them for the birds around our school.

We are trying to read around NZ

This term we are trying to read our way around New Zealand as part of our reading at home. We chose how we wanted to travel. Some of our transport is faster than others e.g. motorbikes, car, horse, plane, skateboard, train, car. We began at Hokitika and travel around moving a town for each book we read. Some of us are visiting places we have never been to before and seeing things we've never seen before too! Here's what our Reading around NZ Map looked like today.

Vinny brought his baby goat to school

Thanks Vinny for bringing your baby goat into school to visit. We all thought 'Everest' was a very cute kid. Thanks for sharing some information about her with us. She was only 3 days old. We are looking forward to having lots of visits from Everest as she grows.

The Trophy Winners for Week 5 were........

Vinny was our Star Is Born

Vinny thanks for being Room 5's 'Star Is Born'. You enjoyed sharing your things with the class and they had no trouble in quickly writing your acrostic poem because they knew lots about you.

Our Phonics Learning

One phonics group has been learning about the short 'a' and 'o' sound in the middle of 3 letter words. Each phonics session we finish off with a dictated sentence that we have to write. Here are some of the examples from today. We are learning to remember that a sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a fullstop and that we need to leave finger spaces between words so that our sentence can be easily read.

Another phonics group is learning the letters of the alphabet and the sound that each letter makes. For the last two days we have been working on the letter n and learning how to write this letter - short stick, tunnel. Look at how clever we are writing this letter.

Vinny's completed his Sight Word Fish!!

Awesome effort Vinny - you have completed all of your sight word fish. Fantastic work. Your fish has been caught in the net because you know all your words. Great job. You were swimming around in the big sea with all the other fish....

Haven't We Aged!!

As part of our 100 days at school we have being writing about the photos Mrs Scott took of us to try and make us look old. We thought they were funny photos. Have a look and read our stories.

Room 5 and Room 1's Musical Talents!!

On Friday it was our turn along with Room 1 to host assembly. We shook our rice drums/shakers along to the music and Room 1 singing 'Kiwi Ukelele'. We got a wee bit stage shy when it came to our dancing but we all thought we did a great job and Mrs Scott and Mrs Phelps were proud of us too!! We made our own drums. Here we are, have a look. We're sure you will like it too!!

What do we want to be when we grow up?

Congratulations to Vinny, Jed and Deegan who earnt the trophies for Week 3. Super job boys, well done!!

And the Writing Rocket Stars for Week 3 were ........

We had 4 people on Friday who earnt the stars for Rocket Writing. Lucy and Leon were awarded the Star for The Leading Rockets - they both wrote 30 words and Vinny and Rhys both earnt the Star for Making the Most Progress and improving their score by 5 more words. Wow great job. This is the 1st time we have had 4 Star Rocket Writers with each star tied. Keep practising at home though because Room 5's other little Rocket Star will be at school this Friday. Good luck.

Maths - Taller and Shorter

Today for maths we talked about the words 'shorter' and 'taller'. Here is a class photo of Room 5 lined up.

We were able to use the words 'taller' and 'shorter' in a sentence. Leon said - "Leon is taller than everyone in Room 5." Lucy said - "Lucy is shorter than everyone in Room 5." Deegan said - "Deegan is taller than Lucy." Charleigh said - "Rhys is taller than Charleigh." Olivia said - "Vinny is taller than Tom." Rhys said - "I am taller than Charleigh." Vinny said - "Vinny is shorter than Olivia." Tom said - "I am taller than Lucy."

Goal Setting

On the last day of the Term the little Minions in Room 5 evaluated and reflected on the goals they had set. Here we are with our reflections.

We have all set new goals that we want to work towards achieving in the next few weeks. Remember to view these on the classroom door. Go little Minions you can do this - yes, yes you can - each and every one of you!!

Our Recent Class Photo

On the last Friday of school before the holidays we held an ANZAC Service at school. We each made a poppy to wear and we painted poppies for the school Wreath that Naomi made. The Wreath is one way we could remember those soldiers who went to war for our country. Here is a photo of Room 5 with the wreath before the Service was held.

Room 5 was able to lay the Wreath beside the cross at the Service.
